Thorough inspection of the area

Ant control requires more than simply spraying insecticide wherever you found them. These sprays can kill only the ants exposed to it and thus in the process only the scouts and workers are killed. The queen ant that is responsible for multiplying stays inside the colony and continues reproduction. It is, therefore, essential that the area infested with ants is thoroughly inspected to locate the satellite nests as well the main nest where the queen ant lives.

Exterminating the colony

Once the colonies of ants are identified, a liquid insecticide is injected directly into the ant hills. However, a complete infestation cannot be guaranteed if all the hills are not located, which is quite difficult, especially if you have a large house. Application of residual ant spray can be effectively used for infestation. Even though it is not considered harmful to humans, some safety precautions are required to be taken while applying them. They are applied at vulnerable locations, such as kitchen tops, below furniture, around window and door frames, etc. These residual sprays also work great as barriers. They are sometimes applied uniformly in a one or two feet strip on the ground surrounding the entire house. It is important not to leave even an inch of area unprotected, especially small gaps in window and door frames.

Setting up insecticidal baits

Setting up insecticidal ant bait is also sometimes resorted to for an effective long term solution to the problem of ant infestation. An ant trap is set up inside the house. This comes in form of sweet foods attracting ants. However, this food has low level of poison in the form of boric acid, abamectin or hydramethylnon so that the worker ants do not die while they are carrying this food to their nests. The bait station must be supplied with this low poison food so that all ants in the colony have a fair share of the poison when they eat this food. All ants, including the ant queen eating this food eventually die from this low level of poison.
