Drywood Termite Inspection & Extermination in Los Angeles, CA

IDENTIFICATION    During the winged stage there are four equal size wings that extend longer than the body by 1/8- to 1/4-inch. They are usually dark to reddish brown. The image to the right shows the various different caste members. While it is uncommon to see termites, it is common to see the winged reproductive to the left around window sills and usually emerging in the late afternoon/early evening.

BIOLOGY AND HABITS   Drywood termites infest only dry wood and are most often found in attic wood framing as they do not require contact with the soil. They obtain moisture from the wood they consume. Winged reproductives fly from an existing colony, pair and fly to new dry wood areas, enter a small hole in the wood, and start to form a colony. Colonies will contain as few as a few dozen and up to 3,000 members. Wood and other cellulose material. Although they will digest cellulose in its various forms, they are only found in wood. Satellite colonies may survive in undisturbed piles of cardboard if conditions are suitable for their survival.

ADDITIONAL  Cause serious damage to structures, often long before they are discovered; piles of sawdust-like pellets are a distinct sign of infestation; nationally, Drywood termites are not as widespread as subterranean termites; colonies may contain up to 2,700 members.
