It is also known as dry rot, even though the problem is primarily associated with wood coming in contact with moisture. It is a serious problem and unless treated on time can lead to structural instability of the building. Tanler Termites is a trusted name in the business of bugs and pest control including treating the dry rot problem in buildings.
Addressing the problem
Wood rot makes the wood to become spongy, crumbly or stringy. At times, it is only the inner layer that is affected by rot and the outer layer remains intact. It appears tempting to only scrape off the apparent rot on the outside, but the mere presence of dry rot warrants treating the underlying rot. More than treating the dry rot, it is important to find out the source of the problem that caused the rot in the first place. If the underlying problem is not addressed and only the wood affected by dry rot is treated, either by epoxy or wood filler, or even replacement, fungi may attack the wood all over again. Improperly installed foundation, leaking pipes, leaking toilets are some of the most common problems that lead to wood rot.
Approaches to treat dry rot
There are various approaches to address the problem of dry rot. The orthodox approach that lays emphasis on using chemical fungicides, and the environmental approach focusing on controlling environmental conditions are most commonly employed. The latter approach basically involves improving the ventilation of locations prone to dry rot. In fact, both these techniques need to be combined for an effective solution to the problem.
New techniques
Apart from above, heat treatment that works on the sensitivity of fungi to heat is also being used these days. In this process, a certain temperature is maintained on the surface of the wood affected by dry rot. Biological treatment that involves use of Boracare and Timbor reducing the ability of fungi to colonize the wood is another possible way for treating dry rot.
